Gary and I became friends while we were stationed at Fort Bragg back in the 1970's. I am saddened to hear of his passing. He was much too young.

Knowing Gary at Miraleste High set the bar for excellence pretty high. He always seemed to have better ideas, funnier stories, and excellent adventures. Through the years I followed his adventures and was so proud of him. He could write, he could draw, he could organize festivals, he understood politics, he could sky dive, he was extraordinary. If I could point to one person with the breadth and depth, it'd be him. We loved his irreverence, his sense of humor and his incredible wit. God bless him, his pop and brother, and his wife.

I, and others in school, were enriched with his presence, and together we got Occidental College to divest in South Africa in the 1970's. I spoke to him about 10 years ago, and marveled how the years have changed all of us. While I did not know him well beyond college, I am most saddened to hear of his death, and send condolences to his family.

Later, in 2005, we had a wonderful time with Gary and Carol in Austin combining Slow Food and deep discussions on social responsibility issues with a marvellous tour through Texas. There were so many plans for the future, so many ideas, so many things to do. My thoughts are with Carol and all dear family and friends of Gary. I'm sure he will remain a great inspiration for all who knew him and for all who get to know him through what he has left to the future by putting his thoughts on paper.

I am just stunned to lose such a vibrant and amazing friend. Gary was an inspiration to me and I will really miss him.

I find comfort in the fact that he was doing something he really loved. And I remember fondly sitting with him at Austin Java as he interwove tales of kayaking in San Marcos with US Broadband policy.
